OpenAI has released a $230 mini keyboard and a $70 ChatGPT basketball alongside the hardware launch.
The product listing describes the ball as part of the “Pause. Play. Prompt.” campaign, a physical reminder that creativity does not live solely on screens. No other mention of this campaign appears on OpenAI’s website.
The basketball is made of 100% rubber to withstand outdoor weather conditions better than the leather balls found on professional courts. It costs $70, a price equivalent to approximately 56 million input tokens for GPT-5.
It is difficult to identify the target customer for this item. Bringing a ChatGPT basketball to a community court in Philadelphia would likely invite ridicule.
The AI industry has a poor track record for product-market fit. The Humane Ai Pin is no longer in production.
Alongside the basketball, OpenAI is selling merchandise with inspirational text. One item reads “Good research takes time,” which serves as perfect attire for a startup founder meeting with investors demanding faster growth. Another $175 quarter-zip features the word “research” in cursive. The product description states the garment features a crisp collar that reminisces on days in academia. This design could alienate developers who never attended college.
There is nothing wrong with company swag. If OpenAI commissions ceramic artists to honour company history through functional tableware, I would like to apply for a position.
What it means
The launch suggests OpenAI is attempting to normalise breaks from screen time, though the specific campaign details remain sparse. The pricing strategy ties the cost of the toy directly to the cost of high-volume AI usage, creating a humorous parallel between physical play and digital processing.
