OpenAI has discontinued its Atlas browser project less than eight months after its launch in October 2025. The functionality previously exclusive to the standalone application is now migrating to a Chrome extension that runs ChatGPT directly within the browser sidebar. Users will receive notifications regarding this transition. Simultaneously, a new desktop feature called Computer Use allows the model to perform background tasks such as clicking, typing, and moving files across different applications. This development consolidates previous attempts to build a dedicated AI interface into a single browser plugin.
The decision signals a strategic shift away from competing directly with Google on the open web. By folding these capabilities into the existing ChatGPT ecosystem, OpenAI prioritises convenience for its current user base. However, this move effectively removes any mechanism to attract users away from Chrome. Consequently, Google retains its competitive advantage through the extensive browsing data it collects. The cancellation adds to a list of recent OpenAI initiatives that failed to gain traction, including plugins, the ChatGPT Agent, and the Sora video model.
- Atlas features are moving to a Chrome sidebar extension
- Computer Use handles background tasks across apps
- OpenAI is no longer attempting to pull users away from Chrome
