Bloomberg reports that OpenAI plans to launch a screenless smart speaker in 2027 with a price tag exceeding $300. The device resembles a hockey puck and contains moving parts, microphones, speakers, a camera system, and lights. It is intended to function like ChatGPT‘s current voice mode while learning from conversations to adapt to individual users. This approach aligns with Sam Altman’s vision of an AI assistant similar to the film Her, even as some observers attribute consciousness to text-based systems. Further hardware products are scheduled to follow this initial release.
The project faces potential delays due to Apple’s ongoing lawsuit accusing OpenAI of stealing hardware trade secrets by poaching over 400 employees. Even if the court case fails, the legal dispute could slow OpenAI’s plans enough to create financial difficulties. OpenAI denies these allegations and maintains it has not violated any intellectual property rights. The company faces a difficult path ahead as it attempts to bring physical AI products to market.
