OpenAI says its ChatGPT ad business hits a $1 billion annual run rate

OpenAI has announced that its advertising business within ChatGPT now generates revenue at an annualised run rate of one billion dollars. The company presents this figure as evidence of a diversified income structure ahead of a planned initial public offering. This push comes while investors scrutinise the firm’s eight hundred and fifty-two billion dollar valuation. The advertising unit, which is roughly twenty days old, supplements existing streams such as enterprise contracts, subscription fees, and usage-based API charges. Testing for ads began in the United States in February before expanding to over forty countries. A self-service platform for advertisers launches today across India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. The ads appear for both Go subscribers and free users. OpenAI states the placements are clearly labelled and do not influence generated answers. Advertisers receive no access to private user conversations.

This shift marks a significant operational change for the firm as it moves from a pure-play research project to a commercial entity. The new revenue channel reduces reliance on subscription growth alone. It also provides necessary data to justify the high market valuation during an upcoming stock market listing. The strategy allows OpenAI to monetise its existing user base without altering the core product experience.
