This phenomenon, termed “task crossover,” shows workers handling duties traditionally reserved for specialists, such as contract reviews, data analysis, and website troubleshooting. Marketing and engineering roles exhibited the highest frequency of this behaviour. The company excluded generic administrative activities like writing, summarising, and scheduling from this calculation. The trend is more pronounced in smaller companies where dedicated specialist teams are less common. OpenAI classified these activities using the U.S. occupational database O*NET to map actions against standard job profiles.
This data suggests job descriptions may shift before official titles change. The observation relies on actual usage patterns rather than self-reported surveys or theoretical predictions. It indicates a practical redistribution of labour across the workforce.
