Google is testing a feature called Call for Me which allows the Gemini AI to place phone calls to businesses on behalf of users. Currently, this function is restricted to Pixel 11 owners in the United States who hold a paid Gemini subscription and run the beta version of the Google Phone app. The system operates by dialling from the user’s own number and navigating automated menus or waiting on hold while reading a live transcript. Google states that Gemini can access approved personal details to handle specific requests such as making reservations, rescheduling appointments, or checking product availability before handing control back to the human.
This development extends Google’s Duplex technology to broader commercial tasks while Meta’s AI agents Muse and Instinct have already demonstrated similar calling capabilities. The company limits the rollout to a small group because real-world conversations require significant nuance that automated systems struggle to manage perfectly. The primary value lies in automating routine administrative burdens without the friction of traditional digital forms. Users retain oversight through real-time transcripts and the ability to interrupt the call immediately.
