Google is testing a new feature called “Call for Me” that allows Gemini to place phone calls on behalf of users to businesses.

Who gets the feature

The rollout begins in the United States for owners of Pixel 11 phones who have an active Gemini subscription. Users must also run the beta version of the Google Phone app on their Android devices.

Google treats this as an experiment. The service uses the user’s own personal number to dial directly from their handset.

What the AI can do

Previous AI calling tools were restricted. This update permits Gemini to share personal details that the user approves during the call. This permission allows the system to perform a wider range of tasks.

Specific examples include checking stock levels at a store, booking a table at a restaurant, moving an appointment to another date, or placing an item on hold.

The system introduces itself, navigates automated phone menus, waits on hold, and manages the conversation. Users can monitor the interaction via a live transcript and take control at any time.

History of the technology

This launch follows years of work on AI-assisted calling at Google. The company demonstrated the capability at an I/O developer conference several years ago. Google Assistant called a salon to make a reservation and added filler words like “umm” and “ahh” to sound natural.

Last year, Google released “Ask for Me” for Gemini. This tool let the AI call businesses to inquire about pricing or services. Pixel smartphone owners also had access to “Hold for Me,” which navigated phone trees and waited for a live operator. “Direct My Call” displayed numbers needed to bypass IVR systems.

Why it is limited

Google is launching the experiment at a small scale. The company states that real-world conversations are nuanced. It needs time to refine the feature before expanding the rollout.

What it means

Users with the right hardware and subscription can offload routine administrative calls to an AI. The system handles the dialling, menu navigation, and waiting on hold, while the user watches the transcript and intervenes if necessary.
