Google has announced Call for Me, a beta feature on Pixel 11 smartphones that allows the Gemini assistant to place phone calls on your behalf. The service is currently available in the US for English speakers and requires a Gemini subscription along with enrolment in the Phone by Google app’s public beta.
How the feature works
The tool targets business interactions. You instruct Gemini to contact a local hardware store or a barber, and the system handles the conversation. It introduces itself and manages the dialogue to ensure your request is met. If the call reaches an automated menu, the assistant can navigate the options or wait on hold. A live transcript appears on your screen, allowing you to take control at any moment.
Google states the system is designed for businesses. It will not contact emergency services. However, you can ask Gemini to dial specific numbers. A spokesperson noted that while Gemini searches for phone numbers automatically, you may provide one directly. This is useful for businesses like tattoo artists with limited web presence. The voice used during these calls matches the one found in Gemini Live interactions, regardless of your preferred accent setting.
Existing calling tools
Call for Me builds on current capabilities within the Pixel Phone app. The application can already screen incoming calls and block robocalls or telemarketers. Hold for Me listens for the end of hold music to alert you when a live person answers. Direct My Call displays menu options visually before they are spoken, letting you skip recorded lists. Real-time Scam Detection also warns users if the other party appears to be fraudulent.
Limitations and testing
While automated calling is more common now than during the Duplex era, reliability remains an issue. Calls are unpredictable, and recipients may hang up assuming the line is spam. There is also the risk of the assistant struggling with accents or trapping a clerk in a repetitive loop. If a shop lacks the required item, the bot must decide whether to leave politely or end the call abruptly.
Google says it wants to test a variety of scenarios to improve performance across different accents and noisy environments. The company confirmed that Gemini will hang up politely if a business cannot meet your needs.
The long-term goal involves machines communicating directly. Businesses are already using AI tools for customer interface, such as Pizza My Heart in California, which allows orders via a text-based chatbot. Soon, you may ask your phone to call a restaurant and have the establishment’s AI answer the inquiry about stuffed crust.

This feature moves the conversation from simple scheduling to direct agent interaction. It shifts the burden of basic inquiries from the user to the device, though the outcome depends entirely on how well the AI understands the human on the other end of the line.
