Google Vids now lets you star in your own AI videos

Google has updated Vids to allow users to generate custom digital avatars that replicate their appearance and voice using a selfie and a voice recording. The feature also integrates the Gemini Omni model, enabling video creation through text prompts and reference images while supporting background swaps, lighting adjustments, and step-by-step edits. These capabilities shift the platform from a simple workplace presentation aid to a broader video creation tool available within Google Workspace. The new avatars are linked to the account holder’s identity and carry an invisible watermark from SynthID. Access to the avatar function is currently restricted to users in specific regions who are at least 18 years old.

This expansion directly challenges dedicated AI video startups by embedding the technology inside a widely used productivity suite. While Google emphasises business applications like internal training, the ability to create realistic personal avatars lowers the barrier for individual content production. The integration suggests a strategy to retain users within the ecosystem rather than letting them migrate to specialised competitors.

  • Personal avatars are tied strictly to the Google account holder.
  • Video edits can be made incrementally without restarting the generation process.
  • Unauthorised use of the tool for creating likenesses of public figures is prevented by the watermarking system.
