Google packs Search and Gemini with new AI study tools

Google announced on Wednesday that it is adding new study aids to Search and Gemini. These updates include AI-generated visuals, 3D simulations, a dedicated student hub, and custom practice quizzes.

The move aims to position Gemini as the go-to assistant for learners, competing against rivals like OpenAI and education startups such as Knowt and Gauth.

Search updates

Students can now generate custom tools and simulations to grasp difficult subjects. Searching for “pH scale” yields an interactive visual within an AI Overview to explain the basics.

Follow-up questions allow for further specialisation. Asking to plot citrus fruits on the scale triggers an interactive experience tailored to that specific query.

Custom practice quizzes are available directly in Search across subjects including science, math, humanities, and foreign languages. A prompt such as “Create a quiz with the most commonly tested vocabulary words to help me prep for the SAT” results in an interactive test.

Lens in Search will introduce an interactive learning experience in the coming weeks. Tapping the camera icon in the Google app and uploading a photo allows AI to explain concepts, identify mistakes, and offer guidance when a student is stuck.

Users can also request study documents based on uploaded files, including PDFs, docs, slides, and photos of handwritten notes. Combining a photo of notes with lecture slides produces a one-pager outlining key concepts.

Gemini features

Gemini Live now supports multi-step research reports that students can discuss conversationally. Users may ask Gemini to research a topic, close the chat, or perform other tasks while the report generates in the background.

A notification alerts the user when the report is ready. They can then discuss the findings or ask follow-up questions using their voice.

Gemini can now generate functional 3D simulations to aid understanding. Responses include tables, grids, and simulations built for the specific prompt. Entering “show me how DNA works in 3D” allows the user to interactively rotate and zoom into a 3D DNA structure.

A dedicated hub in the Gemini app unifies these learning tools. Users can start a study notebook, create flashcards, and take practice quizzes within this single location.

What it means

Students no longer need to switch between multiple apps to find study aids. The new features consolidate research, visualisation, and practice into Search and Gemini, reducing the friction of finding specific learning resources.
