Claude Code gets a /design command that lets developers create UI mockups right in the terminal

Anthropic has released an early preview of a /design command within Claude Code that allows developers to generate UI mockups directly inside the terminal or desktop application. Users execute a prompt such as “/design a few options for {feature}” and the system returns multiple drafts displayed as Artboards. The tool reads the existing codebase to match current styling and lets users select a preferred option before writing production code. Nate Parrott confirmed the feature integrates editor and prompting capabilities from Claude Design into the coding environment. Designs transfer into the build step but require manual saving at present. Users can access the update by running “claude update” in their command line.

This integration shifts the workflow from separate design tools to a unified terminal environment, reducing context switching for developers. It enables rapid visual prototyping without leaving the coding interface, though the manual saving requirement indicates the process is not yet fully automated. The feature targets developers who want immediate visual feedback during the coding session.

  • Mockups appear as Artboards within the terminal interface
  • System matches designs against the existing codebase style
  • Manual saving is currently required to persist changes
