Andrej Karpathy, an OpenAI co-founder and current Anthropic researcher, launched a video platform called HackerTube over a single weekend. He used the Claude Opus 5.5 model to process 43 million comments from two decades of Hacker News archives. The system generated 6,454 short clips that currently receive high recommendation scores within the community. Karpathy noted this viewing experience surpasses YouTube’s own suggestions. The site requires no login, displays a single mid-video frame rather than optimised thumbnails, and stores user state locally in the browser. Shortly after, he created TristanTube using Claude Code in three minutes. This second project drew 47,000 videos from a list of channels belonging to Tristan Hume.
Karpathy stated that Claude Code managed nearly all tasks, including data analysis and server configuration. His only manual actions involved entering a Google Cloud API key, renting a server, and purchasing a domain name. He argues that projects previously taking weeks can now complete in a few hours. This shift highlights how automated coding assistants reduce the friction of building functional web applications. The demonstration suggests that complex scraping and summarisation tasks no longer require deep engineering overhead.
