Spotify and Universal Music Group Strike Deal Allowing Fan-Made AI Covers and Remixes
On Thursday, Spotify revealed a partnership with Universal Music Group (UMG) that will enable fans to use generative artificial intelligence technology to create covers and remixes of their favorite songs. This new feature is set to be available exclusively for Premium subscribers.
The deal marks an important step in the evolution of music consumption, particularly as AI-generated content becomes more prevalent. The move aims to provide a revenue-sharing mechanism with participating artists for any AI-generated music based on their work.
Spotify has been actively developing artist-first artificial intelligence products since last year, collaborating with Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group, Merlin, and Believe. During this time, the company emphasized its commitment to fair compensation and consent in these partnerships.
In a statement, Spotify co-CEO Alex Norström highlighted that “Solving hard problems for music is what Spotify does,” pointing out that fan-made covers and remixes are now part of their strategy. He added, “What we’re building is grounded in consent, credit, and compensation for the artists and songwriters taking part.”
UMG Chairman and CEO Sir Lucian Grainge touted this development as a way to deepen artist-fan relationships and create additional revenue streams.
Previously, services like Suno faced legal challenges when developing AI music-making tools. After settling lawsuits with Warner Music Group and Sony Music, Suno is now in negotiations with UMG over the same issues. Meanwhile, Udio has settled with both Warner Music and UMG but remains in talks with Sony.
Spotify’s move comes amid a series of announcements at its Investor Day event, which also included new features for audiobooks, podcasts, personal podcast creation via AI, and reserved concert tickets for top fans.
