Replit is no longer working with Anthropic, CEO says

Replit has ended its partnership with Anthropic, according to CEO Amjad Masad during his keynote address at TechCrunch Disrupt on Thursday.

The shift follows a strategic realignment. In August, the startup announced a collaboration with OpenAI, yet no official statement confirmed the departure from the previous AI provider.

“I think ChatGPT is better now,” Masad stated. He noted that Replit employs an internal benchmark to measure metrics such as performance. “We publish a public benchmark as well, and consistently, Sol and Astra perform better on building vibe-coded applications from scratch. It was a decision based on both cost, partnership, and performance. And for all these reasons, we just felt like they were a better partner for now.”

Replit offers a cloud-based development environment where users build and launch applications directly within their browser. The previous arrangement with Anthropic involved using the Claude models to power the platform. That deal reportedly helped drive substantial revenue growth for the company.

Not everyone inside the industry accepts the claim that the relationship has ended. One source familiar with the situation, who requested anonymity, stated the partnership remains active.

There is evidence suggesting Replit was still running Anthropic products as recently as September. A blog post from that month cited the Claude Fable 5 and Claude Fable 5.1 models as operating within the Replit Agent production environment.

TechCrunch has contacted Replit for clarification and will update this report if a response is received.

Masad discussed the company’s expansion while on stage at Disrupt, highlighting that enterprise clients are now contributing a larger portion of total revenue.

“We’re not sharing ARR numbers just yet, but in terms of growth, like, I would say, enterprise was like 2% of revenue last year,” Masad said. “This year, I would say like 15% of our revenue is enterprise contracts, and more than 50% of our revenue is B2B.”

The CEO also addressed the importance of safety protocols for artificial intelligence.

“In the same way that us humans need a certain environment to work — you need a nice office, maybe nice good food in the office, air-conditioning, computer — agents need a habitat for them to exist and do good work,” he said. “So that habitat has good orchestration, good error recovery, good safety and security and sandboxing, good networking, good identity and authorization. And once you figure all of that out, then you can deploy AI safely.”

What it means

The switch suggests that performance metrics and pricing now outweigh the brand prestige of previous partners. For developers using Replit, this means the underlying models powering code generation and debugging will change, potentially affecting the specific style or quality of output. The company is also signalling a shift away from its early startup focus toward larger corporate contracts, which now make up the majority of its business.
