Meta has paused its planned update to commercial terms of use after widespread backlash from journalists and users. The original proposal would have required business accounts to allow the company to use content from their websites to train and maintain its generative AI products. Initially set to take effect on October 30, the change was delayed to November 20 before being halted entirely. Meta states it is now consulting with stakeholders while existing terms remain in force.
The pause follows legal pressure from Norway and an investigation by the UK Competition and Markets Authority. A Norwegian court granted a temporary injunction after a case supported by the Norwegian Media Businesses’ Association and 180 media companies. Meta subsequently removed the word “train” from the list of permitted uses and limited data collection to advertising and business products.
- Original deadline moved from October 30 to November 20.
- Legal injunction issued by a Norwegian court.
- UK regulator launching its own investigation.
