DeepL has acquired Mixhalo, a specialist in real-time audio streaming and translation, to integrate its capabilities directly into the platform. This move ensures that conference attendees and festival-goers receive seamless, high-fidelity interpretation without needing to manage their own devices.

The acquisition in context

Mixhalo was established in 2016 by Mike Einziger, guitarist and songwriter for Incubus, alongside his wife Ann Marie Simpson-Einziger, a violinist, and Vik Singh, who now serves as CEO. While the company originally pitched its platform to enhance listening experiences at concerts, it has since evolved to power real-time audio for sports and major live events. To date, the startup has secured over $39 million in funding from investors including Fortress Investment, Founders Fund, Defy Partners, and Cowboy Ventures.

Why the deal happened

Singh noted that the influx of new voice models to the market was actually beneficial to Mixhalo, allowing them to integrate and compare a variety of options. However, he warned that as general model companies expand, they began encroaching on Mixhalo’s specific operational space, making it difficult to compete on price.

The partnership was described as organic. Singh recounted attending a customer dinner where he sat next to Sebastian, DeepL’s CTO. Their conversation highlighted significant overlaps in the event space, API layers, and application layers, covering everything from voice for meetings to document translation and live event streaming.

Already, Mixhalo relied on DeepL as its primary translation provider, making the acquisition a natural consolidation of resources.

Expanding the voice suite

DeepL has transitioned from a text-focused player to a voice leader, launching voice-to-text translation in over 33 languages in 2024. This April, it introduced a voice-to-voice suite for multilingual meetings. Acquiring Mixhalo allows DeepL to deploy this same technology suite specifically into the live event sector.

Jarek Kutylowski, CEO of DeepL, explained the strategic value: “For us, Mixhalo will work as a solution and also a marketing use case. The platform will allow us to show how DeepL’s tech works in real-time and in environments like conferences where people are present on the ground.”

With Mixhalo based in San Francisco, DeepL is opening an office in the Bay Area to expand its US operations. In the competitive landscape, Mixhalo faces rivals such as Wordly AI and Palabra, the latter backed by Seven Seven Six.
