Google AI now supports 300 languages and maps genetic changes
Google technologies currently support more than 300 languages, covering 7 billion people or 86% of the global population. Alongside this expansion, the company released new interactive insights from the AI & Economy ATLAS to show how individuals are using these tools globally. This follows a series of recent advances in scientific AI designed to benefit people:
- Researchers now have open access to the AlphaGenome Atlas, which maps all 9 billion possible single letter genetic changes in the human genome.
- WeatherNext 3 is the most advanced global weather model yet, offering 50% more accurate precipitation forecasts a day or more ahead. It is already integrated into various products.
- A new Planetary Prediction Engine combines data on global health, food security, and socioeconomics to forecast crises. It has been used during the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and to identify vulnerable communities across 21 CDC health indicators in the U.S.
- AI research is being scaled to reduce the climate impact of aviation, with applications currently in use in the U.K. and Asia.
The core belief driving this work is that AI can accelerate scientific progress to improve lives today and in the future. Efforts are focused on key areas: making disease detectable, treatable, and preventable; predicting natural disasters; expanding learning; and creating economic opportunities.
However, the benefits of AI are not guaranteed. Realising them requires society to work together to mitigate risks and challenges. Progress is already enabling bold ambitions and addressing questions once thought impossible.
Advances in disease detection and diagnosis are underway:
- Scientific discovery is deepening. The Nobel-Prize winning AlphaFold has predicted all 200 million protein structures known to science. It is used by 4 million researchers in 190 countries for drug discovery and understanding neglected diseases like Chagas disease and leishmaniasis. AlphaMissense helps predict disease-causing genetic mutations. The AlphaGenome Atlas builds on these to offer insights into how genetic variations alter cellular behavior.
- Detection is earlier. A breast cancer study with Imperial College London and the U.K.’s NHS showed AI can detect 25% of interval cancers previously missed in mammograms of 175,000 women. Progress is also being made in tools for lung cancer, colorectal cancer, and genetic mutations in tumor cells.
- Global screenings are expanding. For tuberculosis, where roughly 40% of infected people worldwide go undiagnosed, a chest X-ray tool used by Nexus Intelligence has screened over 25,000 x-rays across 40 locations in six nations. Bioacoustic models detect TB via coughs. A diabetic retinopathy model has supported more than 1.15 million screenings globally, with plans to reach 6 million over the next decade to detect a treatable cause of preventable blindness.
- Access is expanding. Everyday smartphones and wearables are being used for early detection of cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance, hypertension, loss of pulse, and passive heart rate monitoring. Partners in Arkansas are developing a blueprint for improving health outcomes in rural areas.
- Tools for scientists and practitioners include Co-Scientist, which helps accelerate core steps of the scientific method, such as validating novel hypotheses for acute myeloid leukemia. Open-sourced tools like DeepConsensus, DeepVariant, and DeepPolisher have assisted in completing the human genome and drafting the first pangenome. AMIE (Articulate Medical Intelligence Explorer) works on prospective evidence in real-world settings with institutions like Beth Israel Deaconess Center. It assists frontline care providers, freeing doctors to spend more time with patients.
Accurate predictions of natural disasters are needed to protect safety and livelihoods. Understanding the physical earth allows for better crisis prediction:
- Extreme weather and earthquakes. Authorities in Jamaica used WeatherNext to accurately predict Hurricane Melissa’s path, securing early disaster funding and enabling life-saving preparations. An Earthquake Alert system warned millions in Venezuela ahead of a recent earthquake. Progress continues on cyclones and extreme heat.
- Monsoons and floods. In 2025, monsoon predictions provided information for 38 million farmers in India. Flood Hub forecasts now cover 2 billion people across more than 150 countries, including riverine and flash floods.
- Wildfires. AI tools have helped predict wildfire boundaries in the U.S. and 33 other countries. Partners are working toward a FireSat constellation to detect previously invisible wildfires. In 2025, more than 520 crisis alerts on Google Search provided timely wildfire information to over 75 million users worldwide.
- Next-gen prediction. WeatherNext 3 combines real-time satellite observations with AI to deliver high-resolution, hourly forecasts without immense supercomputing power. This is a major step for data-sparse regions previously underserved by high-resolution forecasting.
- Planetary crisis mapping. The Earth AI Planetary Prediction Engine (PPE) is an autonomous system that uses simple language instructions to predict global crises like disease outbreaks, food shortages, and climate risks. During the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, PPE pinpointed 83% of emerging hotspots ahead of time, outperforming current systems. In Nigeria, it doubled food security forecasting accuracy at the local district level. In the U.S., it outperformed traditional models identifying vulnerable communities across 21 CDC health indicators.
Learning is the foundation of economic and societal progress. Global enrolment for primary school-aged children is 90%, and approximately 87% complete primary education. However, 2022 research showed uneven access, quality differences, and limited content availability across languages. Global learning outcomes have declined over the last two decades across 81 countries.
AI offers a chance to expand access to knowledge and support learners and educators:
- For learners: Tools like Guided Learning enable personalised learning, remove language barriers, and make complex subjects accessible. Free access to student tools is available in multiple countries.
- For educators: AI assists with research, preparation, and administrative tasks, freeing time to spend with students.
Challenges and responsible design remain critical. Issues include accuracy, safety, critical thinking, cheating, and learning loss. Google has partnered with ISTE+ASCD to provide AI literacy training to all 6 million educators in the U.S. Ongoing research ensures tools are designed with teachers in the lead and AI as the assistant. Much work remains to be done together.
Across the economy, AI can drive innovation and productivity for workers, businesses, and organisations. Its true value lies in how people choose to use it and what they build with it:

- The future of work: Economic benefits are neither automatic nor guaranteed. Like other new technologies, AI is expected to reshape work: some jobs will decline, some will grow, and many will change as AI increasingly assists workers. - Skilling: Training must be accessible regardless of geography, language, or access to capital. Google has provided more than $1 billion globally in training initiatives, helping over 100 million people gain essential digital and AI skills, from electricians to rural healthcare workers.
