Anthropic says it will watermark text generated by its AI models

Anthropic has confirmed it will watermark text generated by its models, including Claude, to comply with European regulations. The company updated its support page to state that this change follows the EU AI Act’s Transparency Code, which became effective on August 2. This law requires providers to mark AI-generated or edited content so other systems can identify it.

All models released after that date will automatically include technology to watermark both computer-generated text and files. For files, Anthropic is using the C2PA open standard. The firm stated it will extend support for older models as well, noting the watermark will travel when users copy and paste the text. It will be applied at the model level, meaning the marker remains regardless of which Claude product or surface the text originates from. While the company says the mark may persist through some editing, it is unclear how much modification is needed to remove it. Other major companies like Black Forest Labs, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Synthesia have also committed to adhering to the code.

* Watermarking applies to the Claude platform API, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and Claude Tag
* The company is responding to user backlash and avoiding regulatory scrutiny
* Suno and Substack have recently adopted similar marking measures for music and newsletters
