A.G. Cook’s trademark supersaw sound has helped define modern pop music – now it’s wrapped up in a single soft synth from Native Instruments

Native Instruments has released Super*Saw, a software synthesiser co-developed with A.G. Cook.

The tool codifies the supersaw texture found in Charli xcx’s 360, Beyoncé’s recent albums and Caroline Polachek’s output. This sound relies on multiple sawtooth waves layered and slightly detuned. Previously, achieving this required manual patching. Super*Saw automates the process.

Development took two years. Native Instruments worked directly from Cook’s patches and production sessions.

How it works

The engine uses two independent banks of 16-saw oscillators. A four-corner X/Y Morpher captures four distinct patch states and allows continuous interpolation between them. This turns extensive automation into a single performance gesture.

Chord, scale and quantize tools ensure the instrument remains harmonically usable. Controlled off-grid deviation is available for those seeking dissonance.

Per-voice glide and offset controls manage the “liquid smears and stereo motion” central to Cook’s design.

A preset library covers blissed-out harmonies, metallic dissonance, ravey leads and impossible glides. Built-in chorus, delay and reverb are included alongside LP, BP and HP filters at 2-pole and 4-pole slopes.

Super*Saw integrates with Komplete Kontrol keyboards and Maschine.

Super*Saw is available now for $99/€99.

What it means

Producers no longer need to spend hours stacking oscillators to replicate Cook’s signature tone. The plugin offers immediate access to complex textures while retaining enough control for customisation.
