Waze adds new AI-powered features and customization updates

Google-owned navigation app Waze is launching new AI features that allow users to report road updates via speech and receive personalised routing.

These tools are powered by Google’s Gemini assistant, part of a wider effort to embed the technology across its product suite. The update also aims to help Waze compete with rivals like Apple Maps.

Personalised routes

The app now builds suggested routes using a user’s trip history alongside its knowledge of local traffic patterns. If a driver prefers highways over local streets, the system prioritises those options first. Users who do not want this customisation can switch to alternate routes or disable personalisation entirely in their settings. The feature is rolling out globally on Android and iOS.

Drivers can also use Gemini to locate a destination through a quick chat when they know what they need but lack the exact address. Tapping the search voice icon lets users ask for a coffee shop open now, parking near Grand Mall, or a nearby gas station with the lowest prices. Waze responds with a list of options.

This destination-finding capability is available now to the Waze beta community on Android and iOS.

Motorcycle mode

A new Motorcycle mode uses AI to account for shortcuts and restrictions specific to two-wheelers. Riders get the best route and more accurate ETAs. The system also highlights hazards that are difficult for bikes, such as potholes, speed bumps, raised crosswalks, shoulder endings, and narrow bridges.

Motorcycle mode is rolling out now in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru and the Philippines on Android and iOS, with more countries planned.

Conversational reporting

While Waze already lets users report traffic incidents like slowdowns using natural speech, it now allows them to suggest map updates the same way. Drivers can report road closures or outdated addresses by speaking to the app. For example, saying “The road is closed here” sends those details to local map editors. This feature is rolling out globally on Android and iOS.

Less chatty mode

A new setting reduces interruptions during the drive for users focused on music or podcasts. When enabled, Waze minimises the number of voice prompts and keeps them short. Drivers still receive alerts for hazards and turns, but at a reduced frequency. This mode is rolling out globally on Android and iOS.

What it means

Drivers gain more control over how the app speaks to them and how it plans their journey. Motorcyclists get a dedicated view for hazards they face. Users can interact with the map using natural language rather than typing or selecting icons.
