Twitch streams will train Amazon AI unless you change a setting
Twitch will use your content to train Amazon’s AI models by default. You must go into your security settings and switch a toggle off to stop this. Many streamers will not see this change, or they will miss the steps required to opt out.
On Wednesday, Twitch released a new option to prevent your data from being used. This confirms reports circulating over the last week: the platform is using streamers to train Amazon’s AI models. The announcement came via a post on X.
The new switch is labelled “Allow your channel content to train generative AI content models at Amazon.” Every user is opted in automatically. You find this setting at the bottom of the security page.
Twitch states that if you turn this off, your streams, videos on demand, clips, and chat logs will not be used to train future models. These models are designed to generate or synthesise text, audio, images, or video.
Turning off this specific training does not remove all AI use from your account. Twitch will still run AutoMod to keep the community safe. The company may also use your data for AI-supported features like captions. These tools generate subtitles for clips but do not retain the stream to train a model that creates new content.
The platform frames this as a benefit to users. In practice, Twitch makes this choice for you unless you know about the new setting and actively turn it off. My own Twitch account showed this default state, and users on social media are reporting the same experience.
Twitch executives have discussed using streamer content for AI training for years. In 2024, Mike Minton, the Chief Monetization Officer, said Twitch has a “role to play” in training Amazon’s generative AI models. He added that streamer content was already being used in a prototyping capacity, not at a production scale.
Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Emails sent to Twitch’s public press address repeatedly bounced.
What it means
You need to check your privacy settings if you do not want your work used to build AI. The default is for your data to be used. This applies to the content you upload and the chat you moderate.
Opting out stops your material from training models that create new text, images, or video. It does not stop Twitch from using AI for safety tools or automatic captions.
