The Federal Aviation Administration is deploying an $875 million artificial intelligence system to address a persistent shortage of air traffic controllers across the United States. Known as Smart, or Strategic Management of Airspace, Routes and Trajectories, the software is a cloud-based platform developed by the firm Air Space Intelligence. It is designed to assist controllers by analysing airline schedules, weather patterns, airport capacity, and airspace conditions to predict traffic flows and identify potential conflicts before they happen. The programme will cost the government that sum over a twelve-year period and will initially launch in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area before expanding to other regions. This initiative complements a separate hiring plan announced earlier this year, which aims to erase the longstanding staffing shortage, alongside broader efforts to modernise the nation’s aging air traffic infrastructure.
