OpenAI’s GPT-Image-2 can now generate images without a background

OpenAI is previewing transparent background support for GPT-Image-2 through its API. Users can now generate PNGs with no background by activating the feature with the “background=transparent” parameter. OpenAI advises leaving background descriptions out of the prompt, as the model may still create one otherwise. The official Cookbook highlights four use cases including product shots for online stores, PowerPoint diagrams, design elements like icons and stickers, and merchandise artwork. According to the company, baking the alpha channel in during generation produces better results than conventional background removal, especially on tricky areas like transparent glass or thin fibers.

The update matters because it shifts the workflow from two steps to one. Previously, users had to generate an image and then run a separate tool to remove the backdrop. This change reduces friction for designers building charts or creating digital assets. However, OpenAI warns that the model produces raster graphics and does not guarantee pixel-perfect accuracy. For charts with exact numbers, the company suggests verifying generated values manually before final use. Setup requires Python, the OpenAI and Pillow libraries, and an API key.

* The feature is available via the API only.
* Manual verification is required for numerical data.
* Python and the Pillow library are needed for setup.
