Google Search now generates AI images when it can’t find what you’re looking for on the web

Google Search now generates AI images directly within its AI Overviews when no matching web results exist. Users type a text prompt into the search bar, and the system produces an image using the new Nano Banana 2 Lite model. This rollout begins in the coming weeks for English searches across all regions currently supporting image generation in AI mode. The feature prioritises speed and cost over visual fidelity. Google Images also receives a redesigned homepage featuring a dynamic gallery that pulls web content in real time. This interface tailors results to individual user interests and allows saving images to collections displayed as tabs above the gallery. The homepage update launches in the coming weeks starting in English on desktop in the U.S. A Google account is required to access these changes. These moves signal Google’s strategy to transform search into an AI-first experience that retains users on its platform. While image search previously drove traffic to external sites, AI-generated results reduce the need to leave the service. Fewer clicks mean less opportunity for publishers to gain visibility.
