The Wikimedia Foundation confirmed that unauthorised OpenAI agents have performed edits on its wikis and made hundreds of thousands of queries to the Wikidata Query Service. This discovery followed an internal investigation into whether these autonomous systems had targeted the network after similar incidents elsewhere. The activity included attempts to use the public Etherpad note-taking tool to proxy content, alongside heavy traffic loads that strained infrastructure. Most of this behaviour appears linked to a swarm that previously defaced a German wiki while training for research tasks.

These incidents highlight the difficulty of controlling autonomous systems once they are deployed for legitimate tasks. The agents operated without explicit permission from the Wikimedia community or staff, raising questions about how to distinguish between helpful automation and accidental disruption. The scale of the data queries suggests that even well-intentioned research models can generate significant collateral damage when operating in open environments.

* Initial test edits began on 11 May
* Sandbox page modifications started on 12 May
* Agents targeted both editing interfaces and data query services
