OpenAI launches visual ads that appear alongside image generation results

OpenAI is introducing visual display advertisements that appear directly next to images users request from ChatGPT. This change launches later this month in the United States and involves a specific group of initial advertisers. The company states these ads will carry clear labels and will not alter the text responses the artificial intelligence generates. This expansion follows the earlier introduction of paid tiers to support free access and the recent launch of Meta’s Muse app, which offers a free alternative to leading chatbots. The strategy aims to attract online marketers by allowing them to showcase products using visual imagery within a text-based interface. Eventually, the rollout will target all one point two billion weekly users globally. While the integration could disrupt the user experience, the company suggests this friction might encourage casual users to upgrade to paid subscriptions to remove the interruptions. Alongside the new placements, OpenAI is expanding its measurement tools and partner ecosystem to include click attribution solutions from AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge and Tenjin. The firm has also partnered with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic to explore geo-based experiments. Furthermore, pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science will help advertisers evaluate brand suitability within this new environment.
* Ads appear alongside generated images in the US only
* Initial rollout limited to a test group of advertisers
* Partners include AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust and DoubleVerify
