Meta introduces camera-free AI glasses

Meta unveiled the Ray-Ban Meta Audio at its Connect 2026 conference on Wednesday. The new pair removes the cameras entirely. This move follows backlash over devices being used to record people without consent. Critics had nicknamed the earlier models “pervert glasses”. The new hardware focuses on music, podcasts, calls, speech translation, and the Meta AI assistant, Muse.

EssilorLuxottica built the frames. Prices begin at $349.

Meta currently sells several styles of AI glasses. The audio-only version aims to repair the brand’s reputation after men were filmed recording strangers. A previous update tried to stop recording by tampering with the LED indicator light, but the unease persisted. This new device avoids that issue completely. It also offers a direct rival to Apple’s Siri-powered AirPods.

“Once you get used to high quality audio, it’s just a thing that you want all the time, right?” Mark Zuckerberg said during the keynote. He added that the company realised it could build a whole new category around audio glasses after working on the concept.

The absence of cameras makes the frames slimmer than previous models. They weigh 43 grams. Features include adjustable temple tips, swappable nose pads, overextension hinges, and up to 12 hours of battery life. The included charging case extends this to 48 hours.

There are 23 colour and lens combinations available. Two new styles join the range: a retro-inspired “Clubmaster” and a “Burbank” described as a classic, timeless rectangle shape. Users can also order optical prescriptions.

Preorders open on October 13.

Meta also announced the Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 3), its next-generation camera models. Alongside the Wayfarer, new styles include the Aviator and the Zena, which features a cat-eye frame. These models carry a 12 MP camera supporting 3K Ultra HD video, a six-mic array, and up to nine hours of battery life.

The EssilorLuxottica partnership will expand with more styles, colours, and a collaboration with singer Lisa. This follows an earlier deal with Kylie Jenner. The glasses will roll out to more countries globally.

All Meta AI glasses will connect to the Muse assistant.

Other updates include Dolby Atmos Capture, which selects the best photo from multiple frames. Users can choose landscape or portrait modes. Hearing enhancements for those with hearing loss are coming, alongside more detailed responses and different audio modes. Customisable controls and a “private processing” feature will prevent the company from seeing user data.

What it means

The removal of cameras shifts the product from a surveillance tool to a standard audio accessory. This lowers the barrier for casual buyers who do not want the privacy risks associated with recording others. The form factor becomes lighter and more comfortable for long-term wear. The brand attempts to reclaim trust by removing the element that caused the most controversy.
