Meta acquires AI coding startup Conductor

Meta has acquired Conductor, a startup that deploys multiple AI agents into parallel workspaces to build software projects. The deal was confirmed by the company but details remain scarce, with founder Charlie Holtz promising a new interface by early next year. Holtz highlighted collaboration with Meta’s Superintelligence Labs, noting the high talent density there. Conductor launched its core product last summer and relies on models from external labs like Anthropic and OpenAI rather than building them in-house. Users can deploy these agent teams to the cloud, locally, or via mobile devices to handle separate parts of a project simultaneously. Until November 20, existing features will function normally, but the cloud service will shut down and user data will be deleted thereafter. This move follows Meta’s recent push to close its gap in AI services, including the launch of Muse Code and the rapid adoption of Muse agents by over 10 million users. The acquisition adds another tool to Meta’s expanding portfolio of AI-related purchases.

The transaction matters because it signals Meta’s continued investment in agentic workflows despite a history of lagging behind competitors in this specific area. By integrating Conductor’s parallel workspace technology, Meta aims to enhance its own developer tools and compete with established player offerings. The shutdown of the standalone cloud service marks the end of an independent era for the platform, consolidating its technology under Meta’s infrastructure. This consolidation aligns with the company’s broader strategy to integrate various AI capabilities into its ecosystem.
