OpenAI acquires Pierre Computer Company to make Git keep up with AI coding agents

OpenAI has acquired Pierre Computer Company, the startup behind the Code Storage project and several open-source libraries currently powering its Codex coding agent. The deal brings together Pierre’s “Trees” navigation tool, “Diffs” change viewer, and “Highlights” syntax engine with OpenAI’s existing Pando version control backend to improve workflow when developers and AI agents write code simultaneously. While OpenAI states the acquisition aims to ensure Git workflows function effectively as agents handle parallel tasks, the combined toolset remains a backend infrastructure update rather than a change to public APIs or customer account behaviour. Pierre’s open-source projects will continue to operate under their original licences pending final regulatory approval for the transaction.

The integration addresses specific friction points in collaborative coding environments where human developers and autonomous agents must coordinate within the same repository. By merging Pierre’s file management capabilities with Pando, OpenAI seeks to provide a more coherent history tracking system for complex, multi-agent projects without altering the external interface users currently access. The move signals a focus on internal tooling stability as the company scales its agent capabilities.

  • Pierre’s libraries power OpenAI’s Codex coding agent
  • Pierre’s open-source projects remain open source
  • Regulatory approval is still required for the deal
