Five new laptops from HP, Dell, Lenovo, Acer, and Asus arrive on October 4, marking the official launch of the Googlebook standard. These machines, starting at $899, include a year of Google AI Pro service and 5 terabytes of storage. They run on either Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite or Intel’s Core Ultra 3 chips, with MediaTek’s Dimensity CX C10 Max chip supported but not yet used in the initial lineup.

Android phone users finally have hardware that matches the connection between iPhones and Macs. The new operating system merges Android with ChromeOS to create a distinct desktop experience optimized for x86 and ARM architecture. Chromebooks remain available for schools and budget buyers, but Googlebooks target the Android community with a focus on continuity.
Hardware manufacturers must meet strict standards to produce these devices. They require premium materials like aluminum or magnesium, at least 16 GB of RAM, and a minimum of 45 TOPS for AI processing. A touchscreen, backlit keyboard, haptic trackpad, Dolby Atmos speakers, and studio-quality microphones are mandatory. Battery life must reach 14 hours, and the devices receive 10 years of software updates. Every unit features a Glowbar, an LED strip on the exterior that identifies the machine as a Googlebook.
Developers can program the Glowbar to light up for specific actions, and users can unlock an Easter egg app to customise the light colour and animation. The strip also illuminates when talking to Gemini, similar to the HiLight feature on recent Pixel phones. Google has not confirmed whether it plans to build its own Googlebook under the Made by Google Pixel division.
Android apps on the device fall into three categories. Important data flows from the phone to the laptop upon setup, including Wi-Fi networks, passwords, settings, messages, contacts, and photos. However, some apps like Facebook are deemed better suited for the web, though users can still install the mobile version. A second tier, “Optimised for Desktop,” offers improved layouts and functionality for larger screens. The final tier, “Made for Desktop,” includes native applications like the desktop version of Chrome. Around 20 apps are currently in the optimised or desktop categories, including CapCut, Adobe Photoshop, Notability, and Fantastical.
Gamers can access more than 20,000 titles on the Play Store, with roughly 50 of the top 100 games optimised for keyboard, trackpad, and touchscreen. Since high-end games are not yet downloadable without a discrete GPU, Google is providing one year of Nvidia’s GeForce Now streaming service, which is optimised for the platform.

The platform introduces several AI-driven features. Users can generate desktop widgets with simple prompts to Gemini, similar to capabilities in Android 17. Magic Pointer allows the mouse pointer to suggest contextual actions when wiggled over an item. For example, hovering over an event invitation prompts the user to create the event in Google Calendar with a single tap. Users can also ask Gemini to identify a dog breed in a photo or determine if an email is a phishing attempt.
Rambler, a voice dictation engine that debuted on the latest Google Pixel 11 smartphones, is now native to the system. It intelligently filters out filler words like “ums” and “uhs” and corrects mistakes automatically. Users can request specific tones, bullet points, emojis, or mixed languages. Access is via the Quick Insert key found on Googlebook keyboards and newer Chromebook keyboards, and the feature works in any text field.
Continuity features extend to the Files app, where typing “dog” searches photos across local storage and phone files. The “Continue on” function hands off tasks so apps open on the laptop where they were left on mobile. An app-casting feature allows streaming phone-only applications like DoorDash directly to the desktop. For iPhone users, a new “Link to iOS” app provides access to messages and some notifications, though cross-platform limitations prevent the same breadth of features.
Google states that reinventing laptops is a multi-year project and that the first step is focusing on the Android community because no current laptop is designed to work seamlessly with an Android phone. The Glowbar serves as a callback to the original Chromebook Pixel and will remain a signature element of the design.
