Google bets Gemini can turn casual players into game developers with new Playground feature

Google has launched Playground, a browser-based platform allowing adults in the US to build games using only text prompts without any coding knowledge. Users interact with the system to adjust rules, physics, and environments before testing results immediately. The service relies on the Gemini, Nano Banana, and Lyria models, as confirmed by Google spokesperson Nia Carter.

Completed projects can be shared via link or published in a public gallery, with some genres supporting leaderboards and multiplayer features. The tool is free for all users, though Google One subscribers receive higher weekly usage limits. All published games undergo safety reviews according to Google’s community guidelines. This move follows similar initiatives from Meta and Roblox, while Unity announced its own professional tool, Unity Spark, for a 2026 launch.

* Free access for all US adults
* Safety reviews apply to all published games
