Google AI gets cagey when asked who won the 2020 elections

Google AI Mode now directs users to external sources rather than stating the winner of the 2020 US presidential election. A direct query about the result yields a response advising consultation of the Federal Election Commission for official statistics and winner certification. Testing reveals the same evasive behaviour when asking about the 2024 election, while questions regarding the 2012 contest receive a link to The American Presidency Project. In contrast, detailed and correct answers appear for every other presidential election back to 2000.

This pattern suggests specific instructions govern how the model handles recent American political history. The shift from direct facts to citations indicates a targeted adjustment in training or safety protocols for these specific queries. Such changes do not alter general API behaviour or affect other product features.

* Direct answers are withheld for 2020 and 2024 elections only
* 2012 queries receive links to third-party data archives
* All prior elections from 2000 receive standard factual responses
