Anthropic announced on Tuesday that it is merging the memory systems for Claude chat and Claude Cowork, ending the requirement for users to restate information when switching between the two tools.
One continuous assistant
Previously, a user might develop project ideas over time while chatting with Claude, only to find that Cowork required a full rebrief when it came time to enact those changes. This update removes that friction by ensuring data learned in one area is always available in another. The goal is to make the tools feel like a single entity rather than two separate products.
Anthropic cites a scenario where a manager needs to draft an update or a conference agenda. Because Cowork retains references from past conversations, it already understands the headcount, city, and speakers involved. The user no longer needs to input those details again.
Real-time memory updates
The system will now add topics to memory as a conversation happens, rather than waiting to summarise the chat once it ends. This allows for quicker sharing of new information between chat and Cowork, even while the original conversation is still ongoing.
Privacy and data limits
By default, Claude will not store personal or sensitive information. This includes health data, race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, politics, and gender identity. Users can choose to enable these categories by toggling on “include sensitive topics in memory,” though the app will notify them whenever a sensitive topic is saved.
Certain data points are strictly excluded and will never be saved. These include government-issued ID, Social Security numbers, criminal history, and immigration status, alongside any other matter violating the acceptable use policy.
The memory feature is active by default on Free, Pro, and Max plans across web, desktop, and mobile. iOS and Android users must update their apps to the latest version to access the change.

You can start a discussion in the chat interface and immediately hand that information off to Cowork for action, knowing the assistant remembers the specific constraints and facts you discussed earlier.
