Chrome is now shipping updates every 2 weeks as AI changes the security landscape

Chrome 153 launched on Tuesday as the first browser update to follow a two-week release schedule, replacing the previous four-week cycle across desktop, iOS, and Android. Google implemented this shift to address the increased volume of security patches required by automated AI tools and community bug reports. The company states that shrinking the time between identifying a vulnerability and delivering a fix reduces the window attackers have to exploit known issues. This approach directly targets the N-day patch gap, ensuring that critical security updates reach end users more quickly than before.

The change also supports faster feature deployment, which is necessary as AI-assisted development allows new browser competitors to emerge rapidly. While OpenAI’s ChatGPT Atlas was recently shut down, rivals such as Brave, Opera Neon, and Perplexity’s Comet continue to challenge Chrome’s market position. Mozilla, Microsoft, and Brave have already adopted similar two-week schedules to match this industry standard. Google now experiments with AI features and iterates on them at a pace that demands frequent updates.

* The schedule change follows a move from six weeks to four weeks in 2021.
* It applies to all major platforms including desktop, iOS, and Android.
* Mozilla, Microsoft, and Brave have aligned their release cycles with Chrome.
