OpenAI has announced the removal of text chat limits for all users on ChatGPT, a platform that recently surpassed one billion weekly active users. The update introduces the GPT-5.6 Luna model as the default interface for Free and Go accounts, replacing the previous GPT-5.5 version. Free users will also receive a new Think button to trigger higher reasoning capabilities for complex queries. While text conversations become unlimited, restrictions remain in place for file analysis, image processing, voice interactions, and image generation.
Plus and Pro subscribers gain access to the upgraded GPT-5.6 Sol model, which the company describes as better suited for quick tasks such as web research, planning, and writing. This version provides more compact answers and includes a thinking slider allowing users to adjust the depth of the model’s reasoning based on query complexity. Internal evaluations indicate that factual errors dropped by 62% for Luna and 68% for Sol compared to the GPT-5.5-Instant baseline. The Sol update is available immediately for paid tiers, while free tier features arrive this week.
* GPT-5.6 Luna is the default model for Free and Go accounts
* Factual errors are significantly reduced in the new Luna and Sol models
