Carbon Electra 2: A soft synth that refuses to clash with your session

For producers and sound designers, the most frustrating part of synthesis is often accidental dissonance. A single misjudged pitch can ruin a texture or a melody, forcing you to stop and hunt for the right note. Scaler Music’s latest release, Carbon Electra 2, aims to solve this by embedding music theory directly into the engine of the synthesiser.

While the original Carbon Electra offered raw sonic power, this update prioritises “musical intelligence”. Given that the developer behind this tool also makes the industry-standard music theory workstation, the integration of theoretical constraints into the sound design process feels like a natural evolution.

The Scale Lock mechanism

The headline feature is the Scale Lock. This function allows users to apply major, minor, diminished, or augmented scales, along with specific modes like dorian and lydian, directly to the oscillators. The interface is deliberately intuitive; terms like “wave-terrain oscillators” and “subtractive synthesis” are as opaque to a classically trained musician as “minor scale” or “lydian mode” might be to a producer who never studied theory.

Once an oscillator is locked to a specific scale, every knob twist adjusts the sound within that theoretical boundary. This removes the barrier of needing to know the complex framework of what makes a minor sound sadder than a major one. Instead, users can simply experiment with different options and hear which result they prefer.

“By locking an oscillator on a specific scale, every twist of the knob will adjust the sound within that scale. This makes experimentation much more fun.”

The filter section, known as Filter 2, also respects this lock. It emphasises root notes as different frequencies are cut, ensuring the timbre remains harmonically coherent. Furthermore, the filter scale lock can be set to chords and various intervals to maintain selected harmonies. Even the sequencer information updates automatically to reflect the notes chosen in the active scale.

Deep synthesis capabilities

Once the pitch is secured, Carbon Electra 2 opens up a vast array of options for technical sonic manipulation. The wave terrain oscillators allow users to adjust waveforms over a 3D-modelled surface to generate intricate, evolving textures.

Modulation is handled by three LFOs and two envelopes. The three LFOs are flexible, capable of working individually or being routed together for complex movement. This ensures that while the tool prevents out-of-key errors, it does not limit creative freedom once the harmony is established.

Availability and pricing

Carbon Electra 2 is available immediately in VST3, AU, and AAX formats for both Mac and PC. The starting price is set at $79, which will increase to $99 on 13 July. Existing owners of Carbon Electra can upgrade to the new version for a one-time fee of $39.

Key takeaways

  • Scale Lock integration: Oscillators, filters, and sequencers are all constrained to selected scales and modes, ensuring harmony without requiring theoretical knowledge.
  • Advanced sound design: Features like wave-terrain oscillators and three independent LFOs provide deep textural control once the pitch is locked.
  • Immediate availability: The plugin is ready for Mac and PC users now, with a starting price of $79 that rises to $99 in mid-July.
