Anthropic overtakes OpenAI in B2B adoption for the first time according to Ramp spending data
Paying companies using Ramp’s billing platform now use more AI from Anthropic than they do from OpenAI. However, this does not indicate that Anthropic is a clear leader in the AI market.
The Ramp AI Index shows Anthropic at 34.4 percent of companies paying through Ramp, while OpenAI dropped to 32.3 percent. In just one year, Anthropic’s penetration nearly quadrupled, whereas OpenAI barely increased its share by 0.3 percentage points.
The Ramp AI Index is based on spending data from companies that pay via Ramp—either with corporate credit cards or invoices. It reflects the proportion of companies paying each AI provider without considering usage levels or actual spending. This data may not fully capture global trends, as it heavily favors US-based companies.
Anthropic’s lead could be short-lived
Despite this milestone, Ramp economist Ara Kharazian points to three potential challenges for Anthropic in maintaining its position. First, the company earns more revenue from customers running expensive models, which might push them towards cheaper alternatives. Second, users have complained about outages and declining performance with Claude. Third, the Opus 4.7 model is significantly more costly than previous versions.
Moreover, using Agentic models can lead to higher token consumption because they often involve additional tasks such as calling tools or writing code. This means that a task that consumed similar amounts of tokens last year could now use substantially more due to the increased complexity and functionality of these models.
“The reality is we have never seen a software industry evolve so rapidly, where new entrants can quickly challenge established leaders,” Kharazian writes. “And this pace of development outpaces traditional forces that make it hard for vendors to maintain their market position.”
Because the index tracks spending rather than usage levels, it offers a limited view at best. When prices increase across the board, costs can rise even if usage remains stable. This is happening with Anthropic’s latest Opus 4.7 model and OpenAI’s Codex, which handles similar tasks but at a lower cost.
