Anthropic is constructing a physical biology laboratory in the San Francisco area to conduct real-world drug experiments rather than relying solely on computer simulations. The facility will feature robots guided by the Claude AI model to carry out tasks with minimal human intervention. To support this workflow, the company has released Claude Science, an AI workspace for researchers, and the Model Hardware Standard, a protocol for controlling lab equipment. Eric Kauderer-Abrams, who leads Anthropic’s life sciences division, states that human oversight remains necessary for safety. He believes the greatest opportunity lies in treating diseases currently considered undruggable because no existing treatments address them. AI could accelerate the design of complex antibodies capable of hitting multiple biological targets simultaneously. This initiative follows Anthropic’s acquisition of Coefficient Bio for approximately $400 million in April and the addition of Novartis CEO Vas Narasimhan to its board. The company will not run its own clinical trials at this stage to avoid conflicting with established pharmaceutical firms.
