X now offers an MCP server to make its platform easier for AI tools to use

X has launched a hosted Model Context Protocol server to simplify connections between its platform and AI tools.

The social network, owned by Elon Musk, revealed the service on Monday. It allows applications such as Claude, Cursor, and Grok Build to link directly to the X API using a user’s own account permissions.

Model Context Protocol is an open standard defining how AI models connect to external services. Previously, developers had to build and host their own servers to bridge AI assistants with the X API and manage authentication. This new hosting layer removes that setup work. Users authenticate through their existing accounts, letting developers focus on their projects instead of integration.

Developers have long used the platform’s API to search posts, read conversations, look up users, and analyse trends. The hosted server does not add new features. It simply makes existing capabilities easier to expose to AI applications. This positions X as a network for real-time data retrieval rather than just a social hub.

X joins companies like GitHub, Slack, Notion, Stripe, and Salesforce in offering official MCP servers or endpoints.

There is concern that removing infrastructure hurdles could encourage automated posting or spam. The hosted server does not bypass X’s API rules. The company continues to restrict use if it detects spammy behaviour.

X updated its API v2 earlier this year to tackle AI-generated spam, particularly programmatic replies. The API pricing also changed recently. Publishing posts now costs $0.015 and posting links costs $0.20. X stated at the time these increases were designed to “curb vectors of misuse”, making spam more expensive to run.

What it means

Builders of AI tools spend less time writing code to connect with X. Users gain access to real-time data streams without changing their workflow. The platform faces higher costs for spammers but keeps its existing safety rules in place.
