Shopify opens checkout to browser-based AI agents

Shopify announced on Monday that browser-based AI agents can now complete purchases on its merchants’ sites. This update extends previous capabilities that allowed agents to search inventory and add items to carts, enabling them to read the checkout screen, modify details like delivery options, and submit transactions with buyer authorisation. The change relies on WebMCP support for checkout, including Shop Pay, allowing these tools to interact with the interface without relying on screenshots or scraping webpages. Three new tools named get_checkout, update_checkout, and complete_checkout facilitate this process by letting agents inspect the screen and place orders after the user authorises the action. Gil Greenberg, a staff product manager at Shopify, confirmed the feature is rolling out to all eligible merchants. The system uses Shopify’s Universal Commerce Protocol to ensure accurate commerce facts and required disclosures. Partnerships with top AI agents such as Muse and Instinct already exist to support this agentic commerce framework.

The move matters because it shifts the burden of verification from the software to the human user. Retailers like Amazon and Adidas currently block such agents, whereas Shopify integrates them directly into the checkout flow. This approach prevents agents from navigating HTML built for humans, instead providing structured APIs designed for accurate order placement. The integration ensures that agents can handle complex tasks like changing addresses or selecting delivery methods within the buyer’s browser environment.

* Agents operate inside the buyer’s browser using WebMCP tools
* Transactions require explicit authorisation from the human user
* The system avoids scraping by using structured APIs via UCP
