Perplexity has launched Teammates, an always-on AI agent that operates continuously within its own virtual machine to manage ongoing work tasks. Unlike the existing Perplexity Computer tool which handles single queries, these agents maintain a persistent desktop and browser environment to execute projects independently. Users monitor progress through dedicated threads in the Perplexity app and communicate with the agents via Slack. This feature places Perplexity alongside competitors like SpaceX, Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic, which offer similar persistent agents through Grok Bots, Muse, Dots, and Duet.
The service requires the Max subscription tier at $200 per month, a cost significantly higher than the $100 starting price for Dots or the $20 entry point for Duet. High consumption rates have previously forced SpaceX to impose stricter usage limits on its Grok Bots, suggesting that cheaper alternatives may face similar constraints quickly. Perplexity reported annualised revenue exceeding $750 million as of August, providing the financial backing necessary for such an aggressive expansion into autonomous agent infrastructure.
* Teammates run on isolated virtual machines with full desktop capabilities.
* Interaction occurs through app threads and Slack integration.
* The Max plan is the only option currently available for access.
