OpenAI’s new Agents API gives developers the infrastructure behind Codex and ChatGPT

OpenAI has launched the Agents API in public beta, allowing developers to build cloud-based agents that execute code and process files for extended periods. This service runs on the same infrastructure powering Codex and ChatGPT, offering features such as automatic context management and the ability to delegate tasks to sub-agents.

Developers can select between OpenAI-hosted sandboxes or partner environments provided by Cloudflare, Vercel, and Oracle without incurring extra fees. Billing relies solely on token usage, while the system supports the open-source Codex harness, MCP, and built-in tools like web search.
