OpenAI has launched Astra for Law, a specialised version of its GPT-6 model designed specifically for legal analysis and drafting. This tool connects the underlying artificial intelligence with a dedicated search index covering over 230 million URLs of US case law, statutes, and regulations. The dataset draws heavily from the Free Law Project, which claims to include nearly all published US precedents. Internal testing showed Astra for Law answered 54 per cent of questions correctly on Vals AI’s Legal Research Bench, outperforming the standard GPT-6 Astra model which managed 38.7 per cent using only general web search.
The product targets professional service providers through API access for platforms like Harvey and Legora, while offering firms a Trusted Access program featuring zero data retention policies. OpenAI is also releasing twenty-six plugins to integrate with existing case management software such as Relativity and Clio. This move signals direct competition from Anthropic, which is simultaneously expanding its own offerings for legal work.
