OpenAI is rolling out ChatGPT Health to every US user over 18 on all plans, including the free tier.
This decision follows a lawsuit filed yesterday by a Florida pastor who claimed the tool advised him against seeing a doctor when he was near death.
The feature launched in testing earlier this year. Users could link data from Apple Health, Function, and MyFitnessPal to a dedicated hub. Weekly health queries rose from 230 million to 300 million during that period.
Providers can now connect hospital systems such as Epic and Oracle Health, alongside platforms like One Medical and Function Health.
Previously, the health hub was required for medical questions. Now, users can pull insights from connected data in general chats. Testing showed 70% of health queries occurred outside the dedicated section. The update allows people to check food safety or allergy information within standard conversations.
OpenAI states its models have improved. The smallest model from the latest release, GPT 5.6-Luna, beats GPT 5.5 on the HealthBench evaluation. This benchmark is an open-source test created by the company to judge large language models on medical queries.
The firm confirms it does not train models on user data. It works with physicians to refine its approach.
Terms of service still state the service is not for diagnosing or treating conditions. OpenAI cited these rules in responses to the lawsuit and told the New York Times it is working to make medical answers safer. The company wants people to verify information and rely on professional advice for decisions.
Studies have warned that AI bots are unreliable for medical advice. This warning has not stopped other firms like Anthropic and Google from launching similar features.
Health in ChatGPT is available to logged-in US users with free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans on the web and iOS this week.
