OpenAI announced Dots, a new personal agentic assistant running on GPT-6 Astra, during its Dev Day event in San Francisco on Tuesday. The system is designed to operate independently of specific hardware or interfaces, pursuing user-defined goals in the background with minimal human oversight. CEO Sam Altman introduced the feature at Fort Mason, stating that users can create a primary dot to act on their behalf and eventually coordinate teams of these agents. The service launches immediately for Pro and Business Premium subscribers in eligible markets.
The shift represents a move from interactive chat interfaces to persistent background workers capable of executing complex tasks like monitoring customer feedback or rerunning scientific analysis. Unlike previous tools requiring direct prompts, Dots function as dedicated specialists with unique identities and access to organisational tools such as Slack and Teams. OpenAI is integrating security controls through Microsoft Agent 365 to manage these autonomous actions. The bubbly cartoon branding aims to make the software feel more relatable to users.
