OpenAI confirmed on Monday that a new hardware accessory for its Codex coding assistant launches on 15 July. A video posted to X displays a square device featuring several physical buttons, with the caption stating that favourite Codex shortcuts are receiving an upgrade. This product is not the mysterious AI hardware prototype previously linked to former Apple designer Jony Ive. Instead, OpenAI is releasing the item in partnership with Work Louder, a manufacturer of mechanical keyboards and macro pads equipped with mappable keys, dials, and switches. The silhouette shown in the teaser resembles Work Louder’s existing Creator Micro model, suggesting the new gadget functions as a dedicated controller for developer workflows.
The collaboration signals a shift toward physical input methods for software development environments. While software shortcuts remain standard, hardware provides tactile feedback that can reduce reliance on screen-based navigation during complex coding sessions. This approach targets professionals who prefer dedicated controls over keyboard shortcuts alone.
