OpenAI has launched the Codex Micro, a $230 light-up keyboard designed to work with its AI coding assistant.

The hardware
The device was co-designed with Work Louder. It features light-up “Agent Keys” that display the status of semi-autonomous coding bots. Users can customise Command Keys for frequent actions and use a joystick to start common workflows. A dial allows adjustment of the “reasoning level,” which controls how much time and computing power an agent spends on a task.
OpenAI describes the Micro as a “command center for agentic work.” It replaces the need to manage these bots through a phone or desktop app. The keyboard connects to the ChatGPT desktop app for control and customisation.
A novelty item
OpenAI told TechCrunch the Micro is a limited-run collaboration. This suggests it is a novelty rather than a product for mass appeal. The keyboard appears designed to mark the company’s entry into hardware sales.
Apple lawsuit
Bloomberg reported on Tuesday that OpenAI is developing another device. This item is described as a portable, screenless smart speaker that integrates with ChatGPT. It includes mechanical elements that can move on their own.
Details remain scarce. OpenAI has not explained how a screenless speaker would incorporate moving parts. The report notes the project is still in development and subject to change.
The new device is reportedly being designed by former Apple engineers. Apple is currently suing OpenAI for trade theft.
Apple accused OpenAI senior leadership of a deliberate strategy to extract confidential information. The company alleges OpenAI used that data to build its own hardware. OpenAI has denied wrongdoing.
What it means
Developers now have a physical interface to control autonomous coding agents. The keyboard offers direct access to agent status and workflow shortcuts. However, the connection to Apple’s legal case raises questions about the origin of the design team.
