Ollie, a privacy-focused AI assistant, is shutting down

Ollie, a startup building a privacy-focused AI assistant, announced on Friday it will cease operations on November 6. Co-founder Bill Lennon confirmed the shutdown via X, stating the company could not sustain operations despite raising a $7.5 million seed round led by Khosla Ventures earlier this year. The application connected to user emails and calendars to manage appointments, meals, and bills, aiming to help families stay organised without compromising data security. It notably achieved SOC 2 compliance, an independent audit standard rarely held by mainstream digital assistants.

The closure highlights the difficulty of maintaining strict privacy standards while competing in a crowded market. Lennon noted that newer rivals like Muse and Instinct made it harder to stand out and secure necessary capital. While the app offered unique security benefits, the broader industry pressure prevented the business from scaling effectively. Users will receive instructions to export their data and process refunds shortly.

* Shutdown date set for 6 November
* $7.5 million seed funding insufficient against competition
* SOC 2 compliance maintained until final closure
