Paul Conyngham has launched a new biotechnology company called Gamgee after using generative AI tools to design a personalised mRNA vaccine that successfully treated his dog Rosie of cancer. The Staffordshire bull terrier and Shar Pei mix was diagnosed with malignant histiocytosis in 2021, and Conyngham employed large language models to analyse genomic data and construct a custom treatment plan for the animal. While the initial success with Rosie generated significant media attention, the new venture aims to expand its scope beyond veterinary medicine to include human patients and other species.
The transition from a one-off experimental treatment to a commercial enterprise raises questions about the reproducibility of such AI-driven medical breakthroughs. Conyngham states that Gamgee intends to apply the same methodology to various diseases, yet the company faces substantial regulatory hurdles before it can offer treatments to people. The core challenge remains proving that the AI-generated sequences consistently produce safe and effective vaccines across different biological systems.
