“Muse Gadgets” turns AI hardware into an open-source DIY project

Meta has launched Muse Gadgets, an open-source initiative allowing hobbyists to construct their own artificial intelligence hardware. The project provides firmware for ESP32 boards alongside a Linux SDK designed to connect homemade devices to the Meta AI agent. Code is released under an Apache 2.0 licence, with development discussions taking place on a dedicated Discord server. The company also released the Muse Home Link, a USB-C gadget enabling the agent to control smart TVs and speakers via HTTPS. Five thousand units are currently being produced for free to subscribers while stock lasts.

This approach allows Meta to gather data on preferred form factors before finalising its own hardware strategy. Competitors including Apple and OpenAI are developing their own devices, yet the industry lacks a consensus on physical design. The Ray-Ban smart glasses currently represent the most successful AI gadget on the market. By observing community builds, the company can identify which shapes users actually want.
* Firmware targets ESP32 microcontroller boards
* Linux SDK manages network connectivity
* Home Link connects to devices with HTTPS interfaces
